A THOUGHT ABOUT THE NEW CONSOLES
By: philwrir
I’m sure we have all heard and read that the new consoles will have Always on DRM and will not support used games.
I’m not sure that’s really such a bad thing.
Bear with me here.
For years PC gamers have dealt with Always on DRM(or various other methods of intrusive DRM), limited use, or even single use keys, not being included in big releases, and obscene amounts of developer and publisher intervention in how we use their games. We have also seen less care taken with our versions of AAA titles, and been blamed for piracy and everything companies can think of.
In exchange, we have traditionally gotten better graphics, better frame-rate, and occasionally mod tools.
If you think about it, consoles may finally be getting the same sort of treatment we have had for years now.
And while I’m disgusted by the fact that used games may be getting killed off, and that intrusive DRM may be getting more common, I cant help but giggle at the squeals of dismay from the console gamers who are getting a glimpse of what we deal with on a daily basis and who are horrified by what they are seeing.
If all the rumors are true, I’m interested to see if we as gamers can finally get past the Console vs PC war and start directing our ire at the people and companies that actually deserve that venom.
Sony has announced the PS4
-But that’s ALL THEY DID. Sony did NOT show off new hardware. They did NOT announce a release date and they did NOT give a price. I guess we’ll get that at E3.
We do have some facts though:
-It has streaming games via Gaikai, but PS3 games will not be “natively supported.” Whatever that means.
-A new controller with a small touch screen and a share button (yes a share button… for screen shots and live streaming with UStream).
-Social was a theme throughout the entire conference. Smartphone, tablet, and Vita apps keep you connected to the PlayStation universe even if you aren’t near your PS4.
What a no-show.
